after reading my first blog post I can attest that my definition of feminism has not changed. I still believe it to be a revolutionary movement meant to liberate women from systems of oppression, namely capitalism and the heteropatriarchy that are linked. my definition of feminist media studies also still stands. one thing I learnt in this course that I keep thinking about is that there is exists feminist theories about the media, one that the media reflects existing social relations, and the other is that the media shapes social relations (mirror vs mold). I believe that both of these theories are true. media is manmade so it reflects our own biases and our own social relations, but it is also so prevalent that it can’t shape our opinions and our biases and in turn our behaviour.
knowing this now, as someone who plans to work in media, I can now understand that society affects what I create and that what I create affects society. if I were to become a content creator or someone who works in advertising, I would make it a point to notice all the smallest details on how these ads view women and represent them. be hyperaware of how sex is portrayed and hinted at in every ad involving women, and how it shapes our inherent ideas.
